Originally the column was finished off with a statue of a bird, possibly an eagle, and later a statue of Trajan himself, approximately 5 metres high, was placed in its place, with a lookout point at the top. An obvious propagandistic effect: The emperor dominated the designs of the most important city of the world from above.

 

 

In 1588 and by order of Pope Sixtus V, it was replaced by a statue of St. Peter, which is still preserved.
