ISHTAR GATE

ORIGINS

Built in the year 575 BC by Nebuchadnezzar II is named after the goddess of the same name. It is located north of the city of Babylon it was the main entrance to the city of Babylon during the Second Empire.

The gate is within the Neo Babylonian period. Ishtar Gate was originally one of eight monumental gates of the city of Babylon and part of the walls of Babylon. The doors were dedicated to major deities worshiped by the Babylonians. Across this door it was acceded to Temple of Bel, where New Year celebrations will be held. It meets a symbolic meaning, representing the power and splendor of one of the most important cities of its time.
