Pompeii was inhabited by a pre-Roman people, the OSCs.

The city was founded in siglo.VII and was conquered by the Romans during the republic and converted into a Roman colony (Colonia Veneria Cornelia Pompeiarum). Later it became a summer city, where all the services of a Roman city were. Pompeii had 20,000 inhabitants.

The eruption of Vesuvius completely destroyed the city that was buried by the ashes until the eighteenth century when the excavations began. The lava and the ash allowed to keep the city practically intact.
