ABU SIMBEL

TECHNIQUE

Abu Simbel's construction began approximately on the year 1284 B.C. having a duration of twenty years, until 1264 B.C.

Abu Simbel is a relatively strange construction inside the Egyptian architecture; it is a question of lime rock of the zone where it is located, there have been in use perfectly cut and fitted ashlars, which have allowed to construct the big Colossuses and some of the structures of the interior of the building, as some columns or architraves.

He was one of the 6 hipogeos that were carried out in Nubia. It is said that the purpose of the temples was it of impressing the neighbors and her of reinforcing the influence of the Egyptian religion in the zone.

This building created with the best materials, built in stone and destined to be kept in foot eternally he remained very spoilt because of an earthquake, and his ruins used as quarry of materials for other buildings, especially the neighboring temple of the Pharaoh Ramsés III in Medinet Habu.

For his construction many astronomic factors were born in mind, every October 21 and of February (according to some experts the dates of the birth and coronation of Ramsés II), the first sunbeams were penetrating in the longitudinal axis of the temple up to coming to the sanctuary and they illuminate the statues of the gods, except that of Ptah, which for his god's condition of the inframundo it remains mysteriously in the semidarkness.

This solar phenomenon is a real deployment of ingenuity and of astronomic knowledge the former Egyptians.
